About the Lowman 2D Model

The Lowman Two-Dimensional Model of Effective College Teaching proposes that teaching effectiveness can be understood along two primary dimensions:

Dimension 1: Intellectual Excitement

This dimension focuses on the clarity of presentation and the stimulation of student interest and thinking. It includes aspects such as organization, clarity of explanation, knowledge of subject matter, and enthusiasm for teaching.

Dimension 2: Interpersonal Rapport

This dimension addresses the instructor's awareness of interpersonal phenomena and communication skills. It includes aspects such as concern for students, respect, availability, encouragement, and creating a positive classroom atmosphere.

Implementation Tips

  • Use the model as a self-assessment tool to identify your strengths and areas for improvement
  • Balance both dimensions in your teaching approach for maximum effectiveness
  • Seek feedback from peers and students on both intellectual excitement and interpersonal rapport
  • Develop specific strategies to enhance each dimension based on your teaching context
  • Remember that effective teaching requires both content mastery and interpersonal skills
